Labor Day Weekend- Part II

After some discussion Jordan (who is still planning the weekend) decided that Catalina Island was Monday's destination. He had never been before and wanted to make a day of it and of course to do some more snorkeling. So I called last minute and arranged a couple tickets on the ferry to Avalon. We walked around town for a little while and showed him around. The days weather was amazing. 80 degrees outside with a light breeze and the skies were clear. The ocean was 72 degrees and the visibility in the water was crystal clear and as far as you could see. No crowds either.
The snorkeling was fantastic. I had brought 2 bags of frozen peas with us. I learned years ago that if you want an almost scary fish encounter, open them up in the water and watch out. Oh...and protect your fingers. In an instant every fish for a hundred yards sprinted into my lap, some were biting my fingers, the Garibaldi's (Orange Fish) were biting my eyebrows, all the rest were pushing me through and around the water in their attempt to eat the peas. All I heard was Jordan yelling/screaming nervously through his snorkel because of the whole spectacle. He wasn't prepared for that close of an encounter. He quickly gained his composure and started to laugh as he told me that he had "screamed like a little school girl" We had a good laugh and I then asked him if he wanted to hold the bag and feed them. He quickly said "NO!". We did 3 dives. I'm guessing the smell from the peas were on us throughout the day because the fish stuck with us most of the time on all 3 dives (see pictures). Leslie had accidentally took my camera that goes with my underwater housing, so I didn't get any video of the scene. I bought a cheap underwater camera but it wasn't going to give us quality pictures or video. When we were finished we had a pizza lunch and headed back home around 5:30pm. Another great adventure
we both really enjoyed.

We've spent a lot of time at Catalina at our friend's house. It was fun to recognize almost every picture. Wish we could have been there too!

Those are some great pictures (too bad you didn't have your other camera). Catalina is beautiful. I'd never heard of the frozen peas trick. We'll have to try it sometime (I don't think I'd like the biting eyebrows part). Looks like the two of you had a great time and really enjoyed your Labor Day.

Great fish shots. I've never used peas. In the bahamas I don't have a fridge or freezer to keep them in. Loved the Garabaldi shot.
